One of the most popular bands from the 70s and early 80s is preparing a new world tour in 2018. Yes, that’s right. After 35 years of being broken up, ABBA is making a comeback. This will be possible thanks to technology and virtual reality along with the original members of the group live on stage, according to their own press department.

It will be about an experience that brings the latest trends in virtual technology and will focus on catching a new generation of fans. All this information was posted on their official Facebook page.

Simon Fuller’s idea

This idea was brought by the famous producer Simon Fuller, the creator of the successful TV show franchise “Idols”. Interestingly, he also launched the famous group Spice Girls to stardom. ABBA members will be involved in the creative process.

They said they inspired themselves with endless future possibilities to be part of this creative process, which is totally new for them. That’s according to Benny Anderson, who along with Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältkog, created the group in 1972.

ABBA: a generational icon

First, ABBA shot to fame in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with “Waterloo”. They have sold more than 400 million records and they are still a commercial phenomenon that has inspired musicals and even movies like the famous “Mamma Mia” starring the famous actress Meryl Streep who also produced the film.

The name of the band came from the combination of the first letter of each member’s name (Anni, Benny, Björn and Agnetha) when they lived not only as members of a band, but they also shared their lives as couples. (Anni with Benny and Agnetha with Björn).

The complete debut album “Waterloo” includes very diverse styles which they made trying to find one that appealed most to the audience.

On their next album “Arrival”, ABBA began to show their own music style. This continues on their third album “ABBA” with some of their greatest hits: “Mamma Mia” “I do, I do, I do” and “S.O.S”.

After several successful records and sold out concerts throughout Europe, ABBA decided to conquer the USA. So, they made a new album, “Voulez-Vous” with a totally “disco” sound. The result was a thunderous failure because they could not grab American audience’s attention.

ABBA’S legacy

Despite the enormous capacity that ABBA’s members had to reach any kind of audience, they couldn’t avoid breakup in 1983. A separation that never was officially announced. Still, this Swedish group is still on the chart at the same level as many legendary bands. These include icons such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Elvis. The last chapter of this group has never ended.

So, the enthusiasm generated by its last greatest hits compilation called “ABBA Gold”, the recovery of some of their songs in films like Priscilla’s Adventures and the Muriel’s Wedding, apart from the already mentioned Mamma Mia, showed the world that their fans still want to dance, chill and sing with enthusiasm.

Now you can visit their museum in Djurgarden Island in Stockholm. It can be considered a temple where people can pay their tribute to the band.  ABBA the Museum is now one of hundreds of touristic sites around the Swedish capital.

The visitor will immediately recognize the efforts that these museum promoters made to compile all the material that represents the best of ABBA. The stage recreation that marked the group’s story, the costume exhibit, personal objects used by the members, the records and the awards they got. It can all be seen in about 2 hours.

In conclusion, ABBA is a group that made their dreams come true by doing what they really enjoyed: making music. And next year, they’ll be back!
