The top 10 singles are set according to data collected each week about the physical and digital sales of each single around the country, as well as number of plays on radio stations and streaming.
During 2016, 10 songs could reach number one on the Hot 100 charts. It was actually 11 if we include
Hello by Adele, which reached number one in late 2015. 5 out of those 10 singles were featuring 14 artists in total. 9 of them (Zayn, Desiigner, WizKid, Kyla, Sia, The Chainsmokers, Halsey, Rae Sremmurd, and Gucci Mane) got their first ever number one on the chart.

“Hello”
Even though this song reached the top during the last month in 2015, the first two weeks of 2016 also found this Adele hit as number one.
In the US, “Hello” started at number 49 on the Radio Songs Lists from Billboard 3 days after it was released worldwide. The song became the 24
th song to reach number one that reached the number 1 position on the chart during its first week. This wonder hit is the second best-selling single in US history during its first week, just after “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John. It remained number one during the first 2 weeks of 2016 in United States.
“Sorry”
“Sorry” had a warm welcome by the critics and it was a commercial hit. The single passed 7 weeks as number one in Canada, and 3 weeks in the United States. Justin Bieber was definitely the number one pop artist last year.
“Love Yourself”
In the US, this song made its debut at number 4 on the list, giving Bieber his ninth top 10. “Love yourself” also made its debut at number 2 and 4 on Digital Songs and Streaming with 141,000 downloads and 17.4 million plays.
The next week, “Love Yourself” replaced “Sorry” as number one, becoming the third number one of the artist. Justin Bieber became the first male artist since Justin Timberlake to have 3 songs on the top chart in a year.
“Pillowtalk”
The British artist Zayn composed and produced this song. It is a different song that goes beyond pop style, and its sound reminds us many other artists. It remained in the top chart for about a week. The former
One Direction member got his first number one in the US.
“Work”
Rihanna’s hit single featuring Drake reached number one for 9 weeks, becoming her 14
th number one single since she made her debut as a pop artist.
“Panda”
The debut single of the American hip hop singer Desiigner. The song reached the top of the charts at the end of April and remained there for 3 weeks.
“One Dance”
Drake, the Canadian hip hop artist got his number one as a solo artist featuring guest vocals by Wizkid and the British singer Kyla. It was there for a week starting May 21 until May 28, and then it came back to the top for another 9 weeks in June and July.
“Can’t Stop the Feeling”
It’s the only one on the list that was part of a soundtrack (Trolls). The song made its debut as a number one single on the charts, becoming the 26
th in reaching number one on the first day of its release. It was also the 5
th for Justin Timberlake.
“Cheap Thrills”
The Australian singer Sia wrote the song that was included in her 7
th studio album,
This is Acting. It was the first number one on the list for this artist, and it has a great feature by Sean Paul.
“Closer”
DJ duo “The Chainsmokers” along with the vocal performance of Hasley remained for 12 weeks on the top of the chart, becoming the longest one during the year.
