One summer day as any other in 1991, two brothers Bryan and Ronald Williams founded a rap label called Cash Money Records.
The two brothers had their monetary aspirations that someday they will get out of their poor and sad home at New Orleans.
The Williams brothers had the dreams and will to do all they had to do to succeed. But they had no experience working on a label, or even in the music world. They only had available 100 dollars. As a result, today after 22 years Cash Money Records is one of the most successful brands in the music world. The founders Bryan “Birdman” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams are two of the most rich and powerful people of Hip-hop.
How could the William brothers reach so high?
To start Cash Money Records, also known as “CMR”, the Williams Brothers went to their father, who was the owner of a nightclub.
But unfortunately the few thousand dollars their father gave them weren’t enough. Their brother, Terrence Williams was the founder of a drug crew called The Hot Boys. He was the one who gave them the necessary to make their project.
Ronald and Bryan picked the name “Cash Money Records” as a reference to the movie “New City Jack”. In which Wesley Snipes plays as a rich New York gangster who leads a team called “Cash Money Brothers”.
With their money insured, the Williams Brothers started signing local talent. Their first artist was a 16 years old boy called Kilo-G. And soon they had dozens of artist around them, most notably Lil Slim and Mr. Ivan.
In those first days William Brothers organized local shows. Then they started selling CD’s from the trunk of their car.
One of the most important events in the story of CMR was when they signed a talented DJ/producer called Mannie Fresh.
The records of Cash Money signed dozens of more of artists between 1994 and 1997. But even more amazing, their CD’s were sold between 25.000 and 50.000 copies without any distribution or promotional contract of any important label. The second album of the UNLV sold 60.000 copies. The Hot Boys, who barely where in the age to drive showed the young rapper BG Turk who was 15 years old. It was the first name of the rapper Lil Wayne.
In addition, Cash Money Records won the offers battle to represent famous as Drake, Nicki Minaj, and some others.
Finally, thanks to the brilliant success of Cash Money Records nowadays Birdman has equity of $180 million. He drives a $5 million Buggati and he is rarely seen without it. Most of the time he lives in a stunning $14.5 million house in Star Island, Miami.
