Biography
Artis Leon Ivey Jr. was born on August 1st, 1963 in Compton, California. He is an American rapper who is worldwide known for his song “Gangsta’s Paradise” from the soundtrack of the film “Dangerous Minds.”
He had a very tough childhood, and he had to learn to read at “Pelton Power Program for Kids” at the age of 12. The program was founded by the Texan Jazz musician Aaron Pelton. He began to rap after graduating at the institute. After recording the single “Whatcha Gonna Do”, his cocaine addiction seemed to end with his career.
After overcoming that addiction, and working as a firefighter for a while, Coolio came back, and joined the group “Low Profile”, and after that to “the Maad Circle” (both groups were led by his mentor WC). IN 1994, already as a solo artist, he recorded his first album “It Takes a Thief” with singles with the new style G-Funk.
The second single “Fantastic Voyage” (inspired on the single from the same name of the band Lakeside), made him a massive success around the country.
Gangsta’s Paradise
The single also was inspired on the Stevie Wonder’s melody of the song “Pastime Paradise.” It was included on the soundtrack of the film “Dangerous Minds.” Because the Tommy Boys Records executives thought that the song would barely sell some copies.
The single finally reached number 1 on the U.S lists, as well as in the U.K. It was the first rap single to sell 1 million copies, that was also #1. He became the first Gangsta Rap singer to get number 1 in the United Kingdom.
